These A2 paintings served as tests for three larger pieces.
I enjoy drawing in sketch books, but need to work on a larger scale so have taken to producing these as a way to explore different approaches to painting.
When shown alongside the finished large scale works you can track the decision making process almost like a comic strip.

Very cohesive piece of art, but it makes me wonder ‘what are they all looking at?’
I can’t say with any certainty, but in the three final larger pieces I’ve imagined one is looking to the heavens, one looking in the mirror and one is staring at a partner. I’ve treated each of the final paintings as several possible endings to a hard night out.
I can definitely see ‘looking to the heavens’. You’ve captured such a like-like quality in them, you can’t help but question their motivation……great piece.
Thankyou – i really appreciate it. I’ll have photos of the final pieces up on the next weekend which show which parts of each sketch I chose for the larger pieces.
Looking forward to seeing them
By the way, I’m sure you realise I meant to say ‘life-like’ quality in my earlier comment……I’m multi-tasking at the moment. I expect you’ve been there 🙂
